EXCURSION TO STON AND TRSTENO

This private tour will take you north of Dubrovnik on a unique experience composed for true seafood lovers. You will visit the oldest and grandest botanical garden in the region Trsteno Arboretum and walk the streets of medieval town Ston. On a boat ride with a local oyster farmer you will learn about the industry and help harvest your own lunch - freshest oysters and mussels completed with local wine from the renowned Pelješac Peninsula.

Join us and visit magnificent Ston. After we pick you up from your hotel, we will take a 45 minutes drive up the coastline to a town that once guarded the northern border of the Dubrovnik Republic. Since the time of the Roman Empire, Ston has possessed one of the most important salt factories in the Mediterranean region and in ancient times the inhabitants build stone walls all around their town and all the way to the neighboring village, Mali Ston, to protect it.

Here you will take a boat ride with a local oyster farmer to see how shells are being cleaned and farmed and help harvest your own lunch. On the island Ostrog your host will serve fresh oysters and prepare local dish of mussels called “buzara”, all spiced with myrtle brandy and home-made wine.

After lunch you will return to Ston for a short walk around the town, before leaving the coast to drive along the elevated road that Napoleon Bonaparte built on his way to conquer Dubrovnik in 1806. This little-known route passes through several tiny villages and provides the best panoramic view of the Dubrovnik Riviera and Elaphiti Islands. The Napoleonic road leads our tour back to the coast at a place called Trsteno, where you will visit the oldest botanical garden in the region. You will see two oldest plane trees in Croatia, an ancient aqueduct and a seaside pavilion that was used to film HBO's Game of Thrones, while your guide tells the story of the wealthy medieval family that chose this place to escape from the city. On the pear of Trsteno you will have opportunity to swim in crystal clear sea before return back in Dubrovnik.
